Moldovan history tells the story of an invading army laying seige to the fortress of Soroca, whose defenders - having run out of food and water - were faced with the dismal prospect of surrender to a merciless foe. Then, just as the end seemed near, a flock of storks appeared, bearing bunches of grapes in their beaks which they dropped into the fortress. Thus fortified, the warriors regained their strength and, ultimately, repelled the enemy. Ever since, the stork has been a symbol of good fortune and unity, celebrated every year during the migration of these magnificent, 'magical' birds.
